The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook: The New Classics Review

The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook: The New Classics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As others have noted, the index in this book contains entries for both this book, in black ink, and for The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook: The Original Classics in blue. Well, since this book has a blue cover, you would (as least I did, and continue to) think the blue ink entries are for the blue-covered book. Not so. The index is pretty good; much better than my old stand-by, the New Cook Book (Better Homes & Gardens New Cookbooks). Many index entries have useful "see also" entries.
There are a few (often just a few per section) helpful black and white photos, and some gorgeous color photos of some recipes. Like other reviews, I've noted some easy and some quite difficult recipes. The print on the pages extends into the gutter (the margin in the binding of the book) too much; when the book is open on the kitchen counter, part of the print is curved down into the binding a bit, making it a little less easy to read.

This book is required for the Culinary school that I attend and I have found it extremely helpful. As its title implies, it is for the serious student and a good reference book to keep because it identifies foods, explains proper handling, storage, and preparation tecnique, and also includes recipes. If you just want to throw together a recipe, buy a Betty Crocker cookbook. If you want to do it the professional way, buy this book.

Casserole Dish Porcelain Review

Casserole Dish Porcelain
Average Reviews:

The HIC Porcelain is heavy and this 106-ounce casserole dish is VERY heavy indeed. I like the dish, and the pattern would match anything else you already have. I only have one complaint in that the dish did not have care instructions included. I realize that the write-up states the dish is oven, microwave, and broiler safe, but I was surprised that it lacked any instructions like other bakeware has. I went to the internet to find more about the HIC brand. One place stated that it's oven proof to 350 degrees, and another said 400 degrees. A broiler gets hotter than that, so I don't know how accurate those descriptions were. It also does not have appropriate uses stamped on the bottom like other brands do (microwave, oven safe, etc.). But, all in all, I like the dish and plan on purchasing other sizes.

Mother's Best: Comfort Food That Takes You Home Again Review

Mother's Best: Comfort Food That Takes You Home Again

When I ran into this book at Costco I was excited by the pictures and the recipes... then I realized, this book contained recipes to one of my favorite brunch places in downtown Portland. Really? She is sharing her recipes?
I was immediately compelled to add it to my cart - and bought another copy for the friend who introduced me to Mother's downtown in the first place - and let me say I am quite pleased.
I love how she gives tips throughout her cookbook - and the food is all tasting super yummy! Just had the chicken dumplings last night. My husband is not a big fan of chicken dumplings because they can be all goopy and slimey - but this recipe sold him immediately - the texture was perfect!
I also love how most of the ingredients can be found in a normal shopping store. So many cookbooks these days call for fancy items or hard to find items that even the store clerks can't tell you what they are. These are simple affordable yummy recipes that definitely are great for home cooking.
We just recently became parents of twins - adding our child count to 4. This number makes it a lot more tricky to head downtown for a nice meal... so I am very grateful that she is sharing her genious recipes with us.
If you are up for homecooking - this is the cookbook for you.
And you definitely will have to have the crunchy french toast. My favorite item in the world at Mother's. ENJOY!

Sear, Sauce, and Serve: Mastering High-Heat, High-Flavor Cooking

I've been a fan of Tony Rosenfeld for several years now, due to his wonderful contribution to Fine Cooking (best cooking magazine ever!), and I have his previous chicken cookbook, which I use a lot, so I was excited to see his latest book hit the shelves. A different style of cookbook -- no pictures and technique based - it gives you a master formula for cooking different types of meat, fish, veggies in many ways with lots of sauces, etc to go with (suggestions are made for pairings). I made the Honey Chipoltle Glaze with grilled chicken, and his sauted collard greens, and it was amazing! In fact, my husband said, "this is the kind of meal that makes a man fall in love with a woman." Everything in this book is wonderful, really recommend!!

This dish cleaned up very well after its first use. While I was using it the second time, it broke in the oven while using the broiler. Customer service was very accommodating though, and is sending another in the mail (you have to mail them the broken pieces).

These work great for the oven or the grill. My husband has very large hands and they fit him fine, but they do take a minute or so to pull on (no matter the hand size) so they're not as quick to use as a pot holder, but they work much better. It's nice to not have to worry about burning myself anymore.

Waring Pro TCO600 1500-Watt 6-Slice Convection Toaster Oven Review

Waring Pro TCO600 1500-Watt 6-Slice Convection Toaster Oven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first started to look for a replacement for my old (very, very) Black and Decker SpaceSaver toaster oven I had a long list of requirements. As I hadn't shopped for a toaster oven in about 30 years I didn't realize that those stipulations were wildly optimistic. After months of frustrating research (and one very bad purchase), I was left with two show-stopping requirements: no Teflon (or Teflon-like) coating because of the fumes that emits, and an "I am done" sound that didn't shatter my eardrums and cause my dog to run away from home.
The TCO600 meets both of those requirements. There is no Teflon coating - just bare metal. (I would have preferred the old style blue/black enamel like my old toaster oven had and like my real oven has, but, as I said, I gave up on most of my "prefers".) The sound when the timer (60 minute) is complete is one "ding". That I love.
I'm pleased with the unit so far. The convection fan is quiet, the oven heats to the temperature set. I've used it to bake a few things and was satisfied. Haven't yet used the broiler. The toaster is not the most convenient to use, and you cannot choose a setting and leave it there. (One must turn the timer past 20, then turn it to whatever you think might be the right setting for the bread and wait for the timer to turn it off.) The toast was not bad at all.
It is nice looking, chrome front, painted silver metal along the sides and top. That chrome is going to show every fingerprint that touches it, but it's wiped clean easily enough. It does get hot, as toaster ovens do, but it hasn't caused any problems. The crumb tray is very accessible in the front of the unit. I do like the analog dials rather than pushbutton digital stuff.
It's a bigger footprint than I was looking for. My old unit was not called "SpaceSaver" for nothing: it was small outside and huge inside.
I have not had any problems with the oven being on the same circuit as the refrigerator. My house is fairly new, so maybe that makes a difference.
I've had it about two months. So far, so good.

Nordic Ware Compact Ovenware Baking Sheet Review

The coating does not last - extremely poor durability. I've been very careful with this pan, using only wood or plastic utensils and washing by hand only. Didn't matter - within just a few uses, the coating flaked off and the edges on the underside are rusting. Waste of money!

The aluminized steel construction of this toaster oven baking sheet is wonderful, as it provides even heating and baking--the non-stick surface also makes for easy cleanup. Toaster ovens, especially when used with this sheet, are great for dorms, RVs, offices, apartments, condos, and boats.

HIC Porcelain Oval Au Gratin 10-inch Set of 3 Review

HIC Porcelain Oval Au Gratin 10-inch Set of 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought these last year and just love them. They are thin, so they heat quickly and easily. They are very smooth, so cleanup is also just great, even for burned on food. We cook salmon fillets in them and use them at least once every two weeks. I also bought some larger Corningware ovenware at the same time because I wanted larger sizes, but the Corningware is too thick and I hardly ever use them. That's why I'm ordering another set of the HIC porcelain au gratins. They are a wonderful, useful product.

Nuwave 20201 Analog-Controlled Infrared Tabletop Oven, White Review

Nuwave 20201 Analog-Controlled Infrared Tabletop Oven, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Those who purchase the Nuwave Oven usually have in mind a healthier, cleaner, and more efficient way to cook. The Nuwave does indeed deliver on these counts. It is a healthy alternative to conventional ovens in that it eliminates more saturated fatty oils than they do. It is cleaner in that the clean up time in considerably less than with a standard oven. And it is more efficient than a standard oven in that the combination of convection/infrared styles of heating do produce a tastier result. Now having said that, the potential purchaser must consider areas that one might not think of until too late. First, the sturdiness and quality of the device is inherently far less than that of either a standard oven or a microwave. Even for those reviewers who rave about their experiences all too often report control quality issues after the first year of use. In many cases the device simpy ceases to function. This brings me to number two: Repair costs are prohibitive. In fact it is cheaper to buy a new unit than to fix the old one. The warranty does not cover beyond the standard period. Finally, the Nuwave does work well but only on one type of food at a time. If you were to cook meat and vegetables together, the result would be that the former turned out well but not the latter. A minor note is that the instructions and cooking suggestions are both poorly worded and at times incomprehensible. The bottom line is that the Nuwave Oven is probably a good deal for those who do not plan to use it for more than one year and intend to cook only one type of food at a time.

Norpro 17x12 Stainless Steel Broil and Roast Set Review

Ordered this because it was stainless steel, thinking it would not burn on badly but I was wrong. Have used it only for broiling steak and the first few times could scrub off the splatter, but after that, no matter how or what I scrubbed with it would not come off so I am left with an ugly looking pan and for the money spent, I did not expect this, so my advise is to purchase another product that resists burning on.

Chicago Metallic Non-Stick 4-Piece Toaster Oven Set Review

Chicago Metallic Non-Stick 4-Piece Toaster Oven Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For 6 months, I had only a toaster oven, so I used it to cook everything. This pan set was perfect, and surprisingly great quality. I used either the cookie sheet or the cake pan nearly every day for roasting, baking, broiling. The nonstick is great, the metal is thick and sturdy. These don't seem cheesy at all, especially compared with other sets.
The pan's capacity is about the same as a square 8x8 or 9x9, so you don't have to change quantities for cornbread, brownies, etc.
Now I have a full oven, and no toaster oven anymore, but I still use these pans all the time to cook for just the 2 of us.

Foil Broiler Pans 333 - 1 Pack Review

Foil Broiler Pans 333 - 1 Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Besides being very flimsy each pan comes with a large - about 8 x 8, paper sticker attached with big globs of glue that take some time getting off. This isn't glue you can roll off and has to be scraped off. The pans come in a sealed package so why they put a sticker on each one and use this glue (toxic?) is over kill. Nice for the convenience but I won't be buying this brand again. Back to a heavy rack with foil underneath.
