Great Desserts of the South Review

Great Desserts of the South

This is a fantastic cookbook. I am always asked for the recipe when I bring an item. These are old fashioned recipes that younger people will be completely pleased with but for older people, the recipes bring back sweet memories from their southern childhoods. I hear a lot of older people say, "My mother used to make this". The recipes are generally simple and if you don't know what pan to use, it probably doesn't matter. Although the cookbook is well organized and easy to read, for me, this cookbook is about the result of the recipes, not pitures or narratives. Highly recommend it. 5 stars all the way!

The Filipino-American Kitchen: Traditional Recipes, Contemporary Flavors Review

The Filipino-American Kitchen: Traditional Recipes, Contemporary Flavors
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The dishes in this book fit the title: Filipino American. That is, they are based on the traditional foods of the Philippines but modified to allow the chef to take advantage of fresh local products, and of a minimum of specialty spices. The resulting foods are thus more suited to both the American taste and the American supermarket than highly traditional recipies.
Philippine food traditions are based on their particular variant on oriental cooking, but modified by years of invluence from incoming cultures. The Spanish took over the island in 1542 and left them with a deep impression of Spanish culinary heritage (paella for instance, but without saffron). The Spanish in turn brought with them some Mexican influence. And then there were the Americans, the Japanese, the Chinese.
Ms. Aranas has done an excellent job of fitting these into an American kitchen. You will be hard pressed to flip through this book without finding something that you want to try.

If you eat/prepare lots of seafood, you'll find this book a great reference/cookbook. If you love eating lobster, you may feel obligated to write Chef Jasper and thank him for an exceptional and complete "bible" on preparing and enjoying lobster. I especially appreciated the information on best times to buy, and lobster size versus use versus flavor comparisions, and how to get the most out of every part of the lobster. A definite "keeper"; educational and great recipies.

Mother's Best: Comfort Food That Takes You Home Again Review

Mother's Best: Comfort Food That Takes You Home Again
Average Reviews:

When I ran into this book at Costco I was excited by the pictures and the recipes... then I realized, this book contained recipes to one of my favorite brunch places in downtown Portland. Really? She is sharing her recipes?
I was immediately compelled to add it to my cart - and bought another copy for the friend who introduced me to Mother's downtown in the first place - and let me say I am quite pleased.
I love how she gives tips throughout her cookbook - and the food is all tasting super yummy! Just had the chicken dumplings last night. My husband is not a big fan of chicken dumplings because they can be all goopy and slimey - but this recipe sold him immediately - the texture was perfect!
I also love how most of the ingredients can be found in a normal shopping store. So many cookbooks these days call for fancy items or hard to find items that even the store clerks can't tell you what they are. These are simple affordable yummy recipes that definitely are great for home cooking.
We just recently became parents of twins - adding our child count to 4. This number makes it a lot more tricky to head downtown for a nice meal... so I am very grateful that she is sharing her genious recipes with us.
If you are up for homecooking - this is the cookbook for you.
And you definitely will have to have the crunchy french toast. My favorite item in the world at Mother's. ENJOY!

I can't say enough good things about this book!! I bet I have a dozen low-fat or diet cookbooks collecting dust on my shelves because the recipes either don't taste good, they are too difficult to make, or I can't find the ingredients. Everything I have made from this cookbook has been fantastic and quick and easy, too. My husband loves what I cook now, and it is good for us, too. I am planning on purchasing her first Homestyle cookbook and getting rid of all the rest of my low fat cookbooks!

Sear, Sauce, and Serve: Mastering High-Heat, High-Flavor Cooking

I've been a fan of Tony Rosenfeld for several years now, due to his wonderful contribution to Fine Cooking (best cooking magazine ever!), and I have his previous chicken cookbook, which I use a lot, so I was excited to see his latest book hit the shelves. A different style of cookbook -- no pictures and technique based - it gives you a master formula for cooking different types of meat, fish, veggies in many ways with lots of sauces, etc to go with (suggestions are made for pairings). I made the Honey Chipoltle Glaze with grilled chicken, and his sauted collard greens, and it was amazing! In fact, my husband said, "this is the kind of meal that makes a man fall in love with a woman." Everything in this book is wonderful, really recommend!!

Southern Farmers Market Cookbook Review

Southern Farmers Market Cookbook

This is a well laid-out cookbook with good photos, some surprising combinations of ingredients, and very good ideas for using just the kind of vegetables you're likely to find growing locally in the South. The cookbook is organized both by season and by type of dish. Its style reminds me a bit of Jamie Oliver. The recipes capitalize on the freshness of their ingredients. This would be a nice gift cookbook.

Cooking for Gracie: The Making of a Parent from Scratch Review

Cooking for Gracie: The Making of a Parent from Scratch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A cookbook, a memoir on the first year of fatherhood, and not something I'd usually find myself reading. This however was written by the talented author of The Art of Losing: A Novel, Keith Dixon so I couldn't resist.
I am not much of a chef, nor have I tried any of the recipes laid out in this book. I must say that most of them sound delicious and I plan to try a few of them in the coming weeks.
So my review is more about the memoir than the recipes. Dixon manages to tell his story in an honest, caring and human way. It doesn't come across as overly sentimental or cloying which must be quite a challenge given his subject matter.
I'd recommend this book for any foodie or someone interested in a real, honest and touching account of what being a new father means in today's world.

Farberware FAC850SS 6-Slice Stainless-Steel Convection Toaster Oven Review

Farberware FAC850SS 6-Slice Stainless-Steel Convection Toaster Oven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Very nice. Great design. So far Im happy. I used to have an older Farberware convection oven and it was a bit larger. I liked it better than the new design. Im not all that crazy with the "pizza" design trend with the round exposed "pizza" area in the back of the unit. Its not insulated like the rest of the oven and its hot, and loosing energy thru heat loss. But it seems most ovens now are not concerned with effeciancy.
This company had a great oven about 8 years ago, and now I cant find it.
This is the best for its price though, and it does what its says, but the older unit was better. A bit larger, but much better! I found some used units of the old oven on ebay but they were pretty " used " so I got this one.
My last Faberware lasted 10 years. Im hoping for the same with this one.
Im sure you will be quite happy with this model. I like the crumb tray. and it comes with a broiler pan. Nice touch!

TOASTER OVEN Review

TOASTER OVEN
Average Reviews:

I have looked all over for a good toaster oven. It seems like all toaster ovens have focused more on being ovens that toasters. This on has a great balance of both features. The oven setting works well, but what really set this toaster oven apart is the toasting function.
It has a very large dial that lets you get more accurate with how much you toast your items. It also doesn't require that you turn the timer dial past a certain point before choosing your setting. I really couldn't be happier!

Proctor Silex 31118 4 Slice Toaster Oven Review

Proctor Silex 31118 4 Slice Toaster Oven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(Edit - read update below. Final rating so far 3.5 stars)
---------------------
I'm not sure how this oven performs. As I din't own it long enough to know. (My friends with a bunch of kids have a toaster/oven/broiler that they've been using for years! At least ten. Don't know what their brand is, but it's definitely not this one.)
That was my second time using this oven... (sigh...)
The first time I toasted bread. It came out crisp and perfect.
The second time I was baking potatoes. At some point I opened the door to check how done they were, and from that moment on, the door wouldn't close. There is a part that is supposed to keep it tightly shut, and my guess is that that part gave way. Broke. Now there's a 1/2 an inch gap*. The door opens horizontally towards the bottom. So the gap is in the top where all the hot air rises. That is kind of annoying since all the heat escapes and the oven stops being an oven :-(
It was a uncalled gift, so I'm not THAT upset. But I just built a shelf for it, and my wife was really looking forward to grill toasts with cheese in it. And it happened on the SECOND use!!!
I will do a thorough research before buying any Proctor Silex item in the future!* I could probably place a heavy object against the door and it will keep it shut, but
1) the oven is located on a shelf and there's no place to put anything in front of it, and
2) Can You imagine yourself buying something so defective that you need to "help" it to function?
----------------
UPDATE: March.18.2011
I have fixed the door problem. I have opened the casing with a screw driver, and twisted and bent the spring that keeps the door closed. I guess it's metal dilated a bit because of the heat... Since then It's been working perfectly.
The timer allows you to set it to 15 min auto shutoff. Or its possible to use it without timer. and both will allow to run it on the oven or toaster cycle.
All in all, I'll give it 3.5 stars because:
- It shouldn't have required my input to fix it in the first place
- It's not that large inside, after all. And while the area allows you to put 4 slices of square toasts, the height isn't great enough to bake all you want.
Will try to update again after some time.

Oster 6232 6-Slice Toaster Oven, Black with Chrome Accents Review

Oster 6232 6-Slice Toaster Oven, Black with Chrome Accents
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the largest capacity toaster oven I've seen in this price range, which greatly increases its versatility; it also has two shelves that can be arranged in different ways. So far, the one thing I do not like about it is that "on" and "off" are controlled through the timer. Not only is this a somewhat confusing extra step, but timers are notorious for being the first thing to wear out. Whether this is a problem or not remains (at least a decade, I hope) to be seen. Another reviewer lacked an instruction book and asked for the directions for toasting. For most toasting, use the bottom rack in the "up" position. Turn the temperature control knob to "Max." Turn the function selector knob to "Toast." (Both the top and bottom heater elements will operate.) Turn the timer knob past 15 minutes and return it to the desired setting (for bread, I'd recommend starting with no more than 2-4 minutes and taking it from there).
