The Bon Appetit Cookbook: Fast Easy Fresh Review

The Bon Appetit Cookbook: Fast Easy Fresh

The categories are vast, the suggestions enormous --- pizza for days, soups for years, salads for decades, burgers and dips for eons. Most have fewer than a dozen ingredients, and although the recipes have an international flair, few call for trips to specialty markets. Preparation times aren't offered, but nothing I saw looked as if it would take more than half an hour of preparation.
There are smart suggestions along the way. Grate garlic or ginger into your vinaigrette dressing; for a new sensation, warm your salsa in the microwave. And, happily, the editors have not been locked in test kitchens with no input from the world; among their many smart suggestions is to avoid buying out-of-season produce. It may taste fine, but it's traveled so far that its carbon footprint should make you gag.
I was particularly impressed by the All-American recipes --- there's a lot of comfort food here to help you through the slog of weeknight dinners. For example: a recipe for iceberg lettuce wedges, topped with warm bacon and blue cheese. And chili that cries out for a mug of beer.

West Bend 6111 Heart Smart Indoor Grill, Black Review

West Bend 6111 Heart Smart Indoor Grill, Black

I have used this grill with great pleasure. It's large enough to hold enough food for 4 servings, plus the griddle comes in handy for toasting buns and such. I haven't had it smoke at all. It grills just like outdoors, including the grill marks. And I can have something grilled and on the table fast. No one has to go out on the deck to cook. It's all done on the countertop. I can't say enough good things about this grill. Cleanup is easy and fast, two of my favorite words in the kitchen. I did a lot of research and reading reviews before making this purchase. I believe I found the best of the indoor grills out there.

Sunbeam 7530 Rocket Grill Electric Grilling Appliance Review

Sunbeam 7530 Rocket Grill Electric Grilling Appliance

I bought my Rocket Grill about a week ago from the TV add. I usually shop Amazon when I see something on TV that I like but this time it looked so good I just called up and did the deal on the spot. I could have saved a few bucks had I gone to ...zon first and ordered on line.
Even so I am very pleased with the item to the point I wanted to share the experience with those now thinking of buying one.
To me the best feature is that just like the other reviews, there is no clean up. I figured that was a bit too good be true and it almost is. So far, the only clean up needed was to sponge off the lid. A very slight residue of oil will settle on the inside of the lid as the heated steam from the cooking process rises and passes through. The lid is extremely easy to remove so this kind of clean up is almost negligible.
Let me tell you, I've tried a bunch of kitchen grilling systems. There are those where I would set it and forget it, infra-red convection whiz-bang thingies with huge plastic bell shaped lid, toaster ovens of different varieties and a score of others. They all have their cooking gimmicks and most do a good job of cooking as promoted. BUT THE MESS they made always ruined it. Clean up took longer than the cooking did so after a few tries, those devices were stored and not used. Eventually they would be given to a family member (heh), sold or donated.
The Rocket Grill is a keeper and I will use it regularly. Last night I made two frozen filet mignon steaks today I heated up previously cooked rotisserie chicken, made some hot dogs and a grilled ham and cheese sandwich.
Haven't needed to wash a thing. The secret is in the parchment pouches into which the food is put and within which the food is cooked. Essentially all the grease, fat, spatter, etc is retained inside the bag. Nothing but the steam gets out. No spatter, no cooked on grease, no crumbs, no kidding !!! Nuff Said ... get it !!! You'll love it.

Parchment-paper cooking is a time-tested method used by chefs around the world. With this in mind, Sunbeam developed the Rocket Grill electric grilling appliance, which uses special parchment pouches to hold in all the juices and keep food moist and flavorful. Plus, the pouches channel fat and grease away from food to a reservoir at the bottom of the pouch for reduced fat intake. Enjoy grilled steaks, hamburgers, bratwurst, grilled-cheese sandwiches, veggies, fish, chicken, deserts, and more. To use, simply place food into the parchment pouch, place the pouch into the grill, slide the switch to the desired setting--fresh or frozen--and set the timer. The unit grills most fresh foods in 3 to 8 minutes and most frozen foods in 8 to 12 minutes, for a reduced grilling time of 300 percent--perfect for healthy, delicious meals at a speed that can keep up with any busy schedule. Best of all, there's no cleanup required. Just toss away the mess. Accessories include 48 parchment pouches, cooking tongs, and a recipe guide booklet. The grilling appliance measures 14 by 11 by 11 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty. From the ManufacturerWhat Makes The Sunbeam Rocket Grill Different? Features and Specifications

Playing in the Kitchen Review

Playing in the Kitchen

Lavinia Plonka created a great intro to cooking with 'Playing in the Kitchen'. It's funny, clear, and a good way to go beyond the ordinary for those of us who panic over preparing dinner. If you love to eat but are afraid to experiment with cooking, this is for you. The glossary is a Godsend for the novice, and the sections on how and what to substitute are essential. Even if you don't want to cook, this is an entertaining read. I say buy it today!

Almost from Scratch : 600 Recipes for the New Convenience Cuisine Review

Almost from Scratch : 600 Recipes for the New Convenience Cuisine

I checked this book out from the library last week and logged on today to buy it. Sure, I know how to roast my own peppers and simmer my own stock, but I don't have the time or inclination to do that every night of the week. Mr. Schloss has a book full of delicious recipes that only take a few minutes to throw together. So far we've enjoyed ziti with tomato and olive relish, jerk pork ribs grilled with yams, cream of pumpkin soup with Asiago cheese (okay, I used Parmesan instead) and red tandoori chicken thighs. Last night at the table my daughter said, "You mean this chicken came out of the same book as those ribs? It must be a magic book." I like the wide selection of cuisine types, too.
Note: Some of Mr. Schloss's "essential convenience pantry" ingredients can be expensive, but I appreciate his argument that it's cheaper than buying a pantry full of speciality spices, etc that you can't use every day. I also appreciate the brand recommendations.
