Since my wife got this book, I've had some of the best mexican style food in years. Try the shredded pork. It's the best I've ever tried AND the tamales you can make with it are superb. Chicken and beef dishes are delicious, too, far better than you get at most restaurants. For us, living in the midwest doesn't mean mediocre mexican food anymore. Happy tamale time.

La Comida del Barrio: Latin-American Cooking in the U.S.A. Review

La Comida del Barrio: Latin-American Cooking in the U.S.A.
Average Reviews:

Because I am Latin American I found these recipes to be familiar. I was looking for a cookbook that had traditional meals and I found it in this book. Having my share of cookbooks, I actually found this book to be one of the easiest. As I write this review, I am marinating a Pork Shoulder with Oregano, Salt, Galic and Olive Oil. It really can't get much easier than that. But if you are looking for quick easy cooking during the week, this might not be the best cookbook for you. My one complaint about this book is that it does not have any pictures of the food itself. For those that have never eaten or seen these recipes cooked it can be pretty hard to imagine what it's suppose to look like. Also, being familiar with these recipes I know what to leave out and what substitues I can use.

Cooking with Cafe Pasqual's: Recipes from Santa Fe's Renowned Corner Cafe Review

Cooking with Cafe Pasqual's: Recipes from Santa Fe's Renowned Corner Cafe

The review I did for Ms. Kagel's previous book was entitled: Can You Fall In Love With A Cookbook? Well, the answer was yes and is yes. It is difficult to believe it has been a decade since the last wonderful book was published. In those years I have matured as a cook/baker and it appears Cafe Pasqual has matured, but in a good way. The recipes in this volume are a little different with a bit of Malaysia, Thailand and the exotic East thrown in for good measure. However, to be honest, it is the Southwest recipes I will probably enjoy again and again.
The recipes you will find in this beautifully photographed book (the color is to die for)offer something for everyone. I gave the recipe for Linda's Golden Granola to a co-worker today and she rushed home after work to make some. She's a Yoga instructor, by the way, and vegetarian, of course.
My particular favorite at the moment is the fantastic Red Chile & Sugar-Cured Bacon. If you have been bored to death with breakfast and haven't been able to find a recipe to rock your world in the morning, look no further. I made this yesterday (I pre-ordered the book and got it last week) and got rave reviews from my brunch guests. You simply MUST try this unique and wonderful recipe. Beyond yummy.
Tonight I made the Shortbread Cookies and used my Scotty Dog and Cat cookie cutters. They turned out great. You can never have enough shortbread recipes. Great with Tea.
This week I will be making the Moroccan Eggplant with Cilantro, Ginger & Garlic. I can almost smell the aroma!
This wonderful book has it all. Fantastic recipes for:
Breakfast, Soups, Salads, Lunch, Appetizers, Dinner, and Dessert. You can go on-line to their website and order a wide array of their signature goodies, as well as their fab T-shirts, coffees and other great items. There is also information at the back of the book on how you can order spices and other items mentioned in the book, from companies all over the US. So you can't use the excuse: My store doesn't have these ingredients. You will find them listed for you. Ms. Katherine has thought of everything!
The cover photograph is festive and beautiful, colorful, inviting, warm and homey. At some point in the next couple of years, I will definitely be dropping in at Cafe Pasqual to meet Katherine Kagel and staff, and also enjoy some of the dishes that are represented in this wonderful book. Can't wait! However, you don't have to wait. Just order this book right now and spend an evening just sitting on the sofa going through page after colorful page. Yes, you CAN fall in love with a cookbook! I have. Twice.

Mexico One Plate At A Time Review

Mexico One Plate At A Time

When I was growing up my idea of Mexican food was having to eat those terrible Mexican TV Dinners - YUCK. (The same went for Chinese food.) As a young and middle aged adult I refused to go to a Mexican restaurant based upon my childhood cuisine nightmares. Now I am married to someone who loves food from all around the world. He has been responsible for introducing me to many ethnic foods that I would have otherwise never tried.
Several years ago my husband and I went on a vacation to a place about an hour south of Cancun on the coast near Tulum Beach...Puerta Aventura. It was a 5-star all-inclusive hotel. Among other things that impressed me was the exquisite food. We both must have gained ten pounds on that trip. That was my first taste of good Mexican food. What an eye opener.
Not long ago I was watching FoodTV and saw Rick Bayless, heard about his book, heard the rave reviews on it, and watched several popular chefs prepare authentic Mexican regional cuisine. I was fascinated and wanted to try it out. So I bought this book. Let me tell you folks, if you have never had good Mexican food, this is THE PLACE to start. If you have only eaten it in restaurants, this is THE BOOK to start cooking it.
I began with his Classic Guacamole (to die for), then his Shrimp Ceviche (double to die for) and went on from there. Just the reading and learning itself is a treat. In addition to the recipes, Bayless often goes into detail about the source or inspiration of the recipe; for instance, he talks about the Tortilla Soup...it's his Mom's tortilla soup and he gives the background of the many uses for tortillas. I didn't know this stuff!
He also includes a section on the many types of equipment, spices, herbs, tools and anything else you can think of in preparing and seasoning. There is also a section giving Internet sites to shop for the supplies you will need.
Now I am the proud owner of an electric tortilla press and let me tell you, once you eat a homemade tortilla, there is no turning back to the store bought kind.
Thank you Rick Bayless for writing a book that helps people like me learn the joys of cooking and eating this wonderful food.
